playB.A.'s Goal

It’s crucial for children with autism to learn many things. While language and academics are obviously at the top of the list, learning to interact with and form friendships with other children is equally important.

Typically, due to the smaller, more individualized school settings for children with autism, there are limited opportunities for such interactions, especially with typically developing peers. This is unfortunate for many reasons, not the least of which is the missed chances to see other children talk, play, and make friends. Typically developing peers can serve as unwitting models of these behaviors for children with autism.

However, all of these kids need the chance to be together in order to teach and learn from each other. While children with autism often need to learn, they can also teach their peers how smart they are and how much they have to offer. The real lesson is just how many friends are out there to be made!

Having listened to many parents describe the type of place they want for their children with autism, we decided that, since it didn’t seem to exist, we would create it! playB.A. is a place for kids to play, learn, have fun together and, most important, to become friends. In other words, it’s a place for kids to be kids.
